Journal Entry 5
Activity:
Watched juice videos.
Squeezed little of it into the Breakout demo.
Invested hours:
1 hour at most, outside of lab.
Outcome:
See attached build. Ball is a shooting star with a bright color, trail, and emitting particles. Bricks are setup and colored based on their distance from top left corner. Hitting a paddle or brick makes a sound; paddle adds fireworks effects, bricks shake screen and fade out.
Notes:
Juiciness seems like such an obvious idea now in hindsight, but I would have spent a long time looking at my past credit project games, if I tried to figure out why are they boring on my own. Even though each of the effects is simple, and simple to add (in Unity at least), and doesn't even synergize with others too well, it still makes the game feel so much more alive.
This is why simple mobile connect-3 games are so popular, I suppose; visual treat with minimal input. And so many indie games that work off of one simple mechanic, but the juice makes them fun to play still.
